Social Impact

As majority of the key stakeholders in the agri sector are comprised of people from the under priveleged segment , we have modelled our business into a 'social enterprise' , by which , we balance our objectives to meet 2 key goals :

  • Financial sustainability/value across all stakeholders - make products cheaper, better
  • Social impact - In creating visible improvements in livelihoods of people work with ,Create jobs , oppurtunities for people in rural & urban areas in agri sector

Our definition of 'poverty'

Though several attempts are made by agencies globally and in India on poverty 'eradication', it is ironical that poverty levels have only gone worse over the years.

We find the foll. key reasons :

  • Most of the grassroots work so far has been through selfless work of charitable organisations and non-profits. Though charity can support in initial phases , it should not become a permanant source of sustenance/dependence  for people.
  • Poverty and happiness are often blurred . If one has read "The Happy man's Shirt" In high school , one would realise that just money alone doesn't solve problems. Often it just creates new ones.
  • Defining poverty as an economic 'line' - like BPL or 'less than 2$ per day' etc., are rather crude. People above this line are also many times, not in any better shape.
  • Lot of focus is given to 'rural poverty' whereas we find over the years owing to migration, most villagers now live in the city's slums . The conditions in urban slums is lot worse than in villages.

Strange it may sound, we feel nobody is 'born' poor . It is often the lack of access to certain key inputs/basic life necessities which 'makes' people poor. Education, Financial assitance and continued support can make them come out and lead a respectful life .

How does eFarm's Social Impact programs different ?

Well, for starts , we don't give a person free fish , nor do we teach how to catch fish(he probably knows that or there are more qualified people to teach that)

We provide him better tools to catch fish, help him store fish better to reduce wastage & quality , assist in selling the fish so that he can expand his business and lead a respectful life.

Key programs

Agri sector is own of the largest employers of people in India . But oflate, there is severe need for labour even to do basic tasks as most people have either migrated to city or find the profession not remunerative. Through our various programs we are working to not only to engage people effectively in this sector but also make it profitable and sustainable. As there are multiple roles across the Agri supply chain area requiring people from various skillsets and abilities, we are confident that almost anyone with a willingness to work can be effectively employed in the chain.

Rural :

  • Food processing unit for Self help groups

  • Compost Unit for rural entrepreneurs

  • Flying squad of trained farm labour : On contract short term labours for harvesting/seeding etc.,
  • Sorting/Grading unit for people with minor disabilities

Urban :

  • Cut vegetables unit for a NGO residents
  • Peeling/packing unit for an NGO residents
  • Vegetable retail shop/vending carts for urban SHG in a slum
  • Call centre for Visually Challenged
